Fasting (Ramadan)

Ramadan 2011

The new moon timings to determine the month of Ramadan are as follows:

  • July 30, 2011: 6:40 pm (UTC/GMT)
  • August 29, 2011: 3:04 am (UTC/GMT)

Therefore, God willing the first day of Ramadan is July 31, 2011, and the last day of Ramadan is August 28, 2011 for USA and Canada.

On the other hand, God willing the first day of Ramadan is August 1, 2011, and the last day of Ramadan is August 29, 2011 for Turkey, Middle East, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand etc.

The Night of Destiny (Night of Power) will be, God willing, on August 25, 2011 for USA and Canada, and August 26, 2011 for those countries that start Ramadan on August 1.

Note:
Please check your local sunset times to verify these dates. For example, the last day of fasting is, God willing, August 29 for some countries in west Europe and west Africa even though they may start fasting on July 31, 2011.

The information reported is based on data from the U.S. Naval Observatory, Astronomical Applications Department.

The actual time for each time zone is relative to UT.

To calculate the Ramadan start date, compare the time of the New Moon with the Sunset in your location. If the new moon is born before sunset, you should fast the next day God willing.

Similarly to determine the last day of fasting, compare the time of the next New Moon with the sunset in your location. If the new moon is born before sunset, the month of Ramadan is complete on that day.
